Basel Satellite Shows 2012 Miami, Art Miami, Miami expo, Project Miami and Red DotMiami Art Reviews Ana Bikic and WIlliam Mark Coulthard.
Miami’s Art week had some real hits among-st a national gathering. The Red Dot, Art.Miami,
Miami Project and the Expo and Solo, had all been arranged as a giant block party on a yet to be developed land, parking lots and a closed off street, the last night’s auto backlogs onto the highways around Midtown Miami, Sunday’s crowd had more leg room to appreciate the spectacle of wow wish objects with subjective prices in an area of high unemployment, the objects of art have little to do with an objective art to life, art is a personnel talisman, broach, medallion disguised as decoration or at least it ought to be. If one is going to shell out thousands for little more than paint and canvas it has to have something to say and be well said. It wasn’t hard finding great stuff, it was more exhausting going around the four venues than Art Basel,
who’s spam art areas where more numerous. This was a well organised show series that most of the Gallerists were ‘ok to happy’ about and who wouldn’t mind coming back again next year. Least notable of the events was Art Miami’s hallway homage to abstract expressionism, staged at an exit,it was totally ironic. These early 60’s awful abstracts truly belonged ‘on the way out”. with so many artists exhibiting true creativity and talent the Schuebbe Projects line up looked like some kindergarten token gesture inclusion wall, a favor for leasing the land from a local church but no, it was the real thing. The ridicule of European visual internationalism finally on it’s way out, forgotten and best left undisturbed to rot as a bad memory. Did we really take these guys seriously? How embarrassing for anyone who still hang these. Long live Art, abstract expressionism is dead.
The four events gathered had hanging bronze figures, ancient Chinese painting and ceramics, american collectors editions old and contemporary, amazing illusionary perspective pieces, fine quality portraiture to childish expressionism, unique design furniture, sculpted wire toys for perpetual fun and joy, the marvel of the collective imaginations of dreamers and makers of art from east, south, north, and west. The end of the first week in December is Miami Beach Art Basel but this year it was Miami’s Midtown Art Shows as well.
